Securing land rights for those living on and from the land, especially small farmers, Indigenous Peoples and the landless, is fundamental to protecting their human rights as it is to building their resilience to climate change, and moving towards a sustainable planet.
In a context of land grabbing across across the globe, control over resources is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few individuals and corporations, while inequality is growing. The global community must unite to push for land rights in a quest for social, economic, and environmental justice, ensuring that land and other natural resources stay in the hands of those who depend on them.
The overall theme – United for Land Rights, Peace & Justice – emphasises the ‘ILC family’ nature of the event. This is an opportunity to take full advantage of the potential of our growing network – which has just grown to 262 members across the globe – while continuing to increase engagement with governments to promote people-centred land governance. Guided by the conference theme, members and the partners and government officials that they work with, will enjoy opportunities to learn from each other, with sessions providing a space to discuss and (re-)examine alternative solutions.
