We are almost running out of time to save our planet, and it is urgent that we strive to fulfil the commitments made at COP 26 in Glasgow. Securing the land rights of women, men, indigenous peoples, pastoralists and other local communities is key to effective and sustainable climate action. As we shift from discussion to action, it is
critical that land rights are used as a pathway out of the crisis. We need to invest in local climate leaders, namely women, indigenous peoples, pastoralists and youth. This session will shed light on how securing land rights can be a potent force against climate change. We aim to inspire action with the emphasis on leaving no one behind

MIKE DAVIS
GLOBAL WITNESS
Mike Davis became Global Witness’ CEO in February 2020. This follows three years in the role of Director of Campaigns, Planning and Evaluation, during which Mike has overseen the development of a new Global Witness strategy with a strong emphasis on abuses of power driving climate crisis.
9:25-10:35H
In 2020, Global Witness recorded 227 murdered land and environmental defenders. This makes 2020 the most dangerous year on record for people defending their homes, land, livelihoods, and the ecosystems vital for biodiversity and the climate. Land disputes and environmental damage were the two main reasons for communities’ increased activism. Beyond killings, new data from the ALLIED data working group revealed 563 non-lethal attacks against indigenous peoples, land and environment defenders–which are often a precursor to killings. This session will expose the limitations of the data available to capture the horrifying extent to which defenders rights are violated. Through this we will be taken closer to the reality of defenders on the front line, in Guatemala, the Philippines, Jordan and Italy.

The UN Food Systems Summit was an opportunity to create much needed momentum towards transforming our food systems. Despite the opportunity, the Summit was marred in criticism for reproducing and reinforcing the existing power dynamics that hinder progress towards sustainable food systems. This session intends to address the lack of attention post-UNFSS to land tenure rights and how securing those rights are central for food resilience and confronting the existing unequal land tenure regimes

THE LONG LAND WAR
11:15-12:25H
Inequality and dispossession persist because they serve the interests of the powerful. This power shift is our real next challenge as the ILC enters its next strategic cycle. For real systems change, the people whose lives depend on land need to be setting the rules. This session reflects on where land struggles have come from, and where they should go, drawing on the experiences and insights shared during the Global Land Forum. How can ILC work towards Strategy 2030 in a way that genuinely shifts power to the people’s organisations and social movements that togetherrepresent over 70 million land users
